Eija Liisa Ahtila

This video Finish video artisis by Eija Liisa Ahtila (born 1959), she lives and works in Helsinki.  Her works are mainly motivated by feminism focusing on the construction of the image, the language that is used and the space they are shot in to convey this across to the viewers.

She has had work exhibited in MOMA and won the Artes Mundi Prize in Cardiff, Wales of £40,000. Her work is also held in the collection at the Tate.

This is called "If 6 were 9" and is subtitled but it is the use of multiple screens that interest me, it is like they are floating around giving a multi perspective but with the voice over from 2 different situations that dont always fit the video.

There was a similar film at GOMA over the past year by Fiona Tan called Disorient, but this was shot on two screens with commentary paired up with the other narrative.

Here is a little background on this artist and what pushes her buttons.

This video was made over three screens and is of particular inteerest as it is shot to disorientate a person so thaty they are feeling a little overwhelmed.

Her work is based on women going through a traumatic experience giving lots of views on this experience with the multiple screens. it has been designed to give a feeling of being overwhelmed, confusing the senses and the understanding of the viewer and exaggerating the plot and characters to affect emotional impact.

More Later!!
